What shoe size 42 is equivalent to, and other common sizes
Shoe size 42 is equivalent to a men's UK 8 or US 9. These are the conversions people ask about most. Sizes vary a little between makers, so check the size notes on each product too.
- EU 40: men's UK 6 or ladies' UK 7
- EU 41: men's UK 7, so shoe number 7 in Kenya usually means EU 41 for men
- EU 42: men's UK 8
- EU 43: men's UK 9
- EU 44: men's UK 10
- Size 4 shoes for ladies: EU 37, US 6
How to measure your foot at home
To know your shoe size, measure your foot length in centimetres. Do it in the evening, when feet are at their largest, and wear the socks you normally wear with the shoes.
The foot lengths in the charts are approximate: each UK size is about 8.5 mm longer than the one before, and makers differ by up to half a size, so use them as a guide and check the size notes on the product.
- Tape a sheet of paper to the floor with one short edge against a wall.
- Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall and your weight on that foot.
- Ask someone to mark the tip of your longest toe with a pencil held straight up.
- Measure from the edge of the paper to the mark in centimetres.
- Repeat for the other foot and use the longer measurement.
- Find that length in the foot length column of the chart above.
Between sizes, wide feet and how shoes should fit
If your foot falls between two sizes, choose the larger one, especially for boots and running shoes, where feet swell during the day. You can take up a little extra room with a thicker sock or an insole, but you cannot add length to a shoe that is too short.
A good fit leaves about a thumb's width between your longest toe and the front of the shoe, with the heel snug and not slipping. If your feet are wide, a size up rarely fixes it, because it adds mostly length, not width; choose styles with a roomy toe box or open lacing instead.
Women vs men shoe size
The easiest way to convert between women's and men's sizes is through the EU number, which is the same scale for both. A lady who wears EU 40 is a ladies' UK 7 and a men's UK 6. Men's shoes are usually made a little wider than women's at the same length, so a woman in men's trainers of her length gets a little more room across the foot, and a man in ladies' shoes may find them narrow.
Is shoe size 8 a 42?
Yes, a men's UK 8 is an EU 42. A ladies' UK 8 is an EU 41.
Does 0.5 shoe size make a difference?
Yes, a half size is about 4 mm in length, which you can feel in snug shoes such as football boots and official shoes.
What if my shoes are 1 size too big?
A shoe one size too big will let your heel slip and can cause blisters. A half-size insole or heel grip helps a little, but swapping for the right size is better.
Are men's shoes wider than women's?
Yes, at the same length, men's shoes are usually a little wider at the heel and the ball of the foot.
Which size should I pick for kids?
Measure your child's foot and add about 1 cm for growing room. Check again every few months, as children's feet grow fast.
