Black leather school shoes
Most schools in Kenya ask for black shoes, and black leather shoes are the most common choice. Leather school shoes last longer than synthetic pairs, can be polished back to a shine and let feet breathe through a long day.
Look for a stitched or firmly bonded rubber sole, a padded collar around the ankle and a toe that is not too narrow.
Girls' and boys' school shoes
Girls' school shoes often come as bar or buckle styles, which are easy for younger children to fasten. Boys' pairs are usually lace up derbies or brogues; brogue school shoes have a punched pattern on the leather.
For younger children, school shoes without laces, closed with a velcro strap, save time in the morning. Games shoes for PE are usually white canvas or plain trainers, and some schools also ask for indoor shoes for school halls.
Patent or matt school shoes?
Patent school shoes have a glossy coating that wipes clean in seconds and stays shiny without polish. Matt leather needs polishing but is softer and breathes better.
If your child's school has a strict uniform code, check whether patent is allowed before you buy.
Choosing comfortable school shoes
Children wear school shoes for eight hours or more a day, so fit matters:
- Leave about a thumb's width (around 1 cm) in front of the longest toe
- The heel should not slip out when your child walks
- The sole should bend near the toes, not in the middle
- Measure both feet, because one is often longer
- Recheck the size every term for younger children

The best shoes for school are black leather lace up or buckle shoes with a rubber sole and a padded collar. They last longer and are more comfortable than thin synthetic pairs.
How much are school shoes?
School shoes on our site cost from KSh 1,400 to KSh 2,999, depending on the design and size band. Each product page shows the exact price.
How much room should a child's school shoe have?
Leave about a thumb's width, roughly 1 cm, between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. Any more and the shoe will slip; any less and it will soon be too small.
Is it worth resoling worn out school shoes?
Yes, if the leather upper is still in good shape and the shoe still fits, resoling is usually worth it. If your child has outgrown the shoe, a new pair is the better choice.
What shoes do children need for PE?
Most schools ask for plain white canvas shoes or trainers for games and PE. Check your school's uniform list for the colour required. We don't stock games shoes yet.
